CHANGE UP FOR TOM HAYMAN THIS WEEKEND AT PHILLIP ISLAND

Tom Hayman has made a surprise change up ahead of this weekend’s Shannons SpeedSeries event at Phillip Island. Hayman will make a switch in categories, swapping from the Trico TransAm Series to the Monochrome GT4 Australia category.

 

Racing under Method Motorsport, spearheaded by Chaz Mostert, Hayman will team up with Marcos Flack in the McLaren GT4 and is expected to remain in the GT4 Series for the remainder of the season.

 

The opening round of the Monochrome GT4 Australia season will take place at Phillip Island this weekend, April 12-14; with the calendar also including Shell-V Power Motorsport Park, Queensland Raceway, Sydney Motorsport Park and Mount Panorama, which will be the season finale at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International.

 

The Series will adopt the FIA driver categorisation system, with Hayman and teammate Flack entering as ‘Silver’ licensed drivers, being the highest permitted competitors to participate in the category.

 

Hayman is no stranger to Method Motorsport and the #230 McLaren GT4, having competed in the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour and finished an impressive second place in his class.

 

“I’m really looking forward to this weekend and getting out there for round 1 of the GT4 Series,” said Hayman.

 

“Having had success with this team back in February is a real confidence booster. Flack is a great steerer and the crew at Method Motorsport run a great outfit, so I’m grateful for this opportunity.

 

“It’s a real dream come true to race for such a professional team and a big thanks to Chaz for making this happen too.

 

“We won’t be there in the TransAm this weekend, unfortunately it clashes with the GT4 category, so moving forward we’ll look to run in this category across the Shannons SpeedSeries for the remainder of the year.”

 

That won’t be the end of the TransAm for Hayman though, with double duties set to keep him busy for the rest of the season.

 

“That won’t be the end in the TransAm though, instead we’ll run the Ford Mustang in the TA2 Racing Series. Round 1 for the TA2 Series will start after Phillip Island, so we’ll head to Sydney Motorsport Park 19-20 April.

 

“Hopefully we’ll have better luck in the TA2 Series than we did in the TransAm, but it’ll also allow me to hop between the two cars and gain as much track time as possible, as well as steer two different cars.

 

“A big thank you to all of my sponsors and supporters for your continued support. It means a lot. Hopefully we can put on a show this weekend and come away with the goods!”

 

The Monochrome GT4 Australia Series kick off with a 30-min practice session on Friday 12th April, 10:50am local time.

Hayman unbeaten in Trans Am at QR

With victories in Races 3 and 4, Tom Hayman was unbeaten across the weekend in the National Trans Am Series fourth round at Queensland Raceway.

Race 1 was declared a non-event before he took out Race 2 on Saturday. He also won the first on Sunday ahead of fellow Mustang driver Lochie Dalton and Elliott Barbour in his Camaro. The latter was second in the last race in front of series leader James Moffat (Mustang).

Hayman was confident in his performance. “If I had to fight them, it might have been different, but I felt I had them covered,” he declared.

Second for the round, Barbour praised the performance. “Two family-run teams, it’s great to be able to take it up to the big teams,” he enthused.

Moffat was third overall and enhanced his points lead over Dalton, while Hayman holds third.

Hayman led Race 3 from the start, with Thornburrow and Moffat vying for second when they clashed at Turn 3. Moffat spun while Thornburrow was able to continue, albeit behind Dalton and Cody Gillis (Mustang).

Then followed Elliott Cleary (Mustang) and Ben Grice, who had made up many places quickly in his repaired Mustang. His charge came to an end a few laps later when he stopped in front of the pits and brought out the Safety Car.

A second Safety Car interruption came when Thornburrow pulled up after his brake pedal to the floor. Moffat had fought back to fourth ahead of Brett Holdsworth (Camaro), Gillis, Tim Brook (Challenger), Cleary and Mark Crutcher (Mustang) as the race finished with full course yellows still in place.

It was a similar tale for Hayman in Race 4, where again, he led from start to finish. Throughout the duration, Barbour held second ahead of Moffat. Gillis had fourth in the early stages before he let his teammate Cleary through and later retired with a broken axle.

Cleary later had the power steering fail which put him off at Turn 2. The fluid deposited caused Brook and Grice to travel through the gravel trap and for Crutcher to spin.

After the race went green again, Dalton chased Moffat to the chequered flag ahead of Thornburrow, Brook, Crutcher and Grice, who had made a quick pitstop. Josh Webster, Craig Scutella and Brett Holdsworth, in their Camaros, completed the somewhat depleted field.
